Cheering news! That is what is coming out of Team Nigeria’s camp in Germany with head coach of weightlifting Patrick Bassey declaring that they are at home and shaping up well ahead of the Olympics.
The coach who was full of praise for the National Sports Commission (NSC) for making the camping possible noted that his athletes are training under excellent sporting facilities that would put them in the right frame of mind before the London games.
“We are at home here in Germany and our preparations are moving on smoothly. The facilities we have in camp are excellent and the athletes are concentrating on the task ahead. The National Sports Commission (NSC) has done well by getting us to a place where we can fully concentrate and perfect our strategies before going to London,” he said.
Nigeria has seven lifters in camp. Two of them (one male and one female) will eventually be entered for the Olympics.
President of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation Mazi Chimdi Ejiogu disclosed yesterday that coach Bassey has up till the end of June to decide the two lifters that would eventually be entered for the London games.
“The coach has up till the end of this month to make up his mind. He is monitoring the lifters from the other countries coming to London, their weight category and the weight category where we stand a chance. So a whole lot of factors will come into play.
The current form of the lifters we have in camp will also come into play. I am happy we have a sound coach in Bassey. I know at the end of the day he will take a decision that will see us getting something out of the Olympics,” Ejiogu said.
Some of the lifters in Germany include Chinenye Fidelis, Miriam Usman, Felix Ekpo, Ben Oloko and Augustina Nwokolo.
