AFN, Nike put relationship on ice

Sportswear manufacturing giants, Nike has declined to supply kits to the Nigerian team competing at the African Championships in Benin Republic next week.

Competent sources at the Athletics Federation of Nigeria told Sports Vanguard that the relationship between the AFN and Nike has sailed into trouble waters as the American firm was of the view that the AFN was making excessive demands for kits.

“They refuse to supply us kits for the African Championships. This is because they claimed that they have already given us more than enough this year.

“Consequently the president sent samples to our board member in China. We will be supply our own kits at the African championships.

It was gathered that Nike gave the Nigerian athletes who were camped in Atlanta, USA bags of equipment, which they felt could have covered them at the African championships. But those kits developed wings at the secretariat of the AFN.

Last year AFN president Solomon Ogba went to the USA to sign a kit endorsement contract with Nike.
