Foundation laments plight of Nigerian families

BY LAJA THOMAS

The Founder/President, Asabe Shehu Yar’Adua Foundation, Mrs. Asabe Yar’Adua has called on all aggrieved families  to sheathe their swords and return to path of peace, dialogue and conviviality as violence  destroys the vital essence of the family.

Yar’Adua who was speaking at a ceremony to commemorate this year’s UN Family Day in Abuja, lamented that the Nigerian family has been consistently under threats because of an admixture of controllable and uncontrollable circumstances in our environment.

She said: “The general economic gloom has compounded the woes facing the family, especially in Nigeria and most developing countries. It is a growing economic hardship being precipitated by the sharp decline in government expenditure on capital projects and empowerment schemes, owing to an astronomical rise in overhead costs. Budgets for educational needs by the authorities fall short of the crucial demand with its dire consequences on the family.  Thus, the family lives in perpetual fear because of the rising state of insecurity”.

Also commenting on the current security challenges facing the country, she said, “lives of many families have been ruined, having lost their bread winners or their businesses completely destroyed. This is indeed the situation that the average family in Nigeria has found itself.”

“The family in Nigeria today needs hope; it needs fresh air of peace and confidence. But this can only be achieved in an atmosphere of brotherliness, stability and safety. These virtues must be the primary goal of all of us. We must return to those lofty values and ideals that in the past recommended the family in Nigeria to others.
