NIGERIAN companies have been urged to get the ISO certification of their products, which ultimately represents quality management system standards.

This advice was given by the Director-General of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON, Dr. Joseph Odumodu, at the official presentation of NIS ISO 9001: 2008 certificate to Intercontinental Distillers Ltd, IDL, in Lagos,  weekend.

While congratulating IDL on the feat, Dr. Odumodu said, “by this achievement, this company has joined the lofty class of quality management system certified companies in Nigeria.

This is a giant stride in the pursuit of excellence to provide quality products to consumers”, adding that, “the NIS ISO 9001: 2008 quality management system approach provides a globally recognized and acceptable solution to the challenges associated with quality management.”

The SON DG cautioned that “Intercontinental Distillers Ltd, would have to note that this journey to excellence embarked upon does not have an end as quality is a moving target. Our challenge to you today is to keep the system healthy and up to date to reap the full benefit of ISO 9001: 2008 approach to management.”

He added: “These systems having been certified will be placed on six months surveillance audits to ensure continuing stability and effectiveness of the implementation of the quality management system. In the course of the audit exercises, where non-conformances are observed and are effectively corrected within specified time frame, the system will retain the certificate. However, the certificate will be withdrawn if the structures in place for certification break down and necessary corrective actions are not taken on observed non-conformances.”

Also delivering his welcome address, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of Intercontinental Distillers Ltd, Engr. Patrick Anegbe enumerated the significance of the ISO 9001: 2008 certificate to his organisation. His words: This award/recognition is a marketing tool and the certification is a stamp of consistent quality recognized globally. Apart from image enhancement of our company, the ISO certification will also serve as a competitive edge in the marketing of our brands both within and outside the country. The IDL has already been awarded the Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS) mark for product quality and consistency. Therefore, the ISO certification of our quality management system further demonstrates IDL’s commitment to quality and represents reassurance to our numerous customers that or brands are world class.”

The IDL boss further gave assurance to the commitment of management to quality management. He said, “by ensuring that all our systems and operational procedures are documented, well understood and  adhered to at all times, there will be less need for guess work and mistakes will be avoided, while induction of new employees will be easier and continuity maintained”, adding that, “the improvement of our quality management system is an endless activity of the company, and in this way, we strive for higher levels of attainment at all times in order to ensure consistently high quality products through well managed processes and procedures.”
