Gunmen kill three policemen in Anambra

AWKA—BARELY 24 hours after some hoodlums attacked a police station at Amichi in Nnewi South local government area of Anambra State and carted away 14 AK-47 rifles, another gang of armed men went to Ukpor police station, also in Nnewi South local government and killed three mobile policemen attached to the station.

Their bodies have been deposited at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, NAUTH, Nnewi, mortuary.

The three policemen, names withheld, were said to have been posted to the station only three weeks ago.

The hoodlums, suspected to be armed robbers, operated in white Hummer vehicle and a Hilux Jeep stormed Ukpor police station shooting sporadically and in the process, hit the three mobile police officers.

It was learnt that the robbers, on arrival at the station, started calling the names of some officers at the station to come out and challenge them while they used locally made grenades to damage part of the station.

Policemen at the station were said to have taken to their heels on hearing the sound of the guns and it was at that point that the three victims were hit.

Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Anambra State command, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka, who was on his way to the local government when Vanguard called in his office confirmed the incident.
