Edo PDP to electorate: Don’t sell your voters’ card

BENIN—EDO State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday advised voters in the state not to sell their voters cards to politicians going about buying them for use at the forthcoming governorship election for their selfish ends.

PDP in a statement by its state Publicity Secretary, Mr. Matthew Urhoghide, said voters card represents the power of its owner and should be used to exercise his or her free will at the July 14 election.

“Your voters’ card must not be sold to anyone who comes under any guise, be it government, political party or individual no matter how much he is offering to pay. We are aware that the card-buyers intend to give the cards to people from outside Edo State to use in the July election.

“We are also aware that 15 persons from each polling unit have been enlisted to buy these cards from their owners. Edo people are reminded that selling their cards so cheaply means mortgaging their future and unknowingly installing a government that has no social contract with them.” and this has been responsible for the failure of past governments, which believed that they had paid for their mandate with such offers.”

PDP described the action of the card-buyers as wicked, inhuman, criminal, condemnable and undemocratic, adding that a party should try and win votes in an election by pursuing issues they can achieve instead of buying voters card thereby setting the platform for rigging an election.

“Edo PDP frowns at this and advises every law-abiding citizen to resist this criminal act and report, to law enforcement agents, anyone who approaches them with money to obtain their voters cards,” it said.
