Imo State governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has promised to support Heartland Football Club of Owerri as they proceed in the CAF Confederation Cup as well as in their campaign for the Premier League title.
Governor Okorocha, who was delighted over the team’s 2-1 victory over Uni sports of Cameroon in the return leg of the CAF competition last Sunday in Owerri, told a cross section of journalists that his government is poised to develop sports generally in Imo state and will therefore give the team the needed support to perform well in both competitions..
According to him, “We are eight months now in office and our primary mission for sports in Imo state is to develop sports generally. And we are making efforts towards achieving that. The Dan Anyiama stadium is our priority to make it a good stadium to play in. The most important aspect is to encourage the players to do more. Their victory is just the starting point of new things to come for the state.
Continuing, he said, “The people are aware of our aim and I assure you that we will do our best. Though the players have not gotten all that is required of them but part of their requirements have also been met but we will ensure we get all their requirements so that they will be more motivated and go to the continent and also in the league to make Imo and Nigeria proud.”
On what the state is doing to help the female league in the state , Governor Okorocha said, “we are just eight months in office but we have plans for them and we are doing everything within our reach to ensure we get a proper female league in the state that will be sponsored.”
“We are aware of the benefits we will get having a female league because it would enable us catch them young. That is why we are doing everything within our limit to ensure there is a female league in the state,” he concluded.
