AWKA- Following the recent attack on a police station in Nnewi North in Anambra State which further exposed the vulnerability of security agencies, the Federal Government has been urged to increase the funding of the force to achieve better result.
Speaking after visiting the police station, the senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District, Senator Andy Uba, said: “This attack is not only unfortunate, but barbaric. How can people be so lawless and threaten the security of not only law enforcement agencies, but the peace-loving people of the state?”
Senator Uba described the level of destruction as devastating and unfortunate. He said: “I am shocked by the level of destruction to the police station as well as death of police officers, who were carrying out their duty of maintaining the peace. It is sad that they had to die in the line of duty of keeping the peace. May their souls rest in peace and may God console and take care of the family they left behind.
“Apart from being sorry, I also call on the Federal Government to increase the funding of the Nigeria Police Force. I was appalled by the deplorable state of the station. I am amazed at how the police are able to sustain themselves with poor facilities and poor welfare. I call on the Federal Government to increase funding for the police to make them more effective.
“I have invited the Inspector-General of Police to assess the level of damage so that renovation can be carried out as soon as possible.”
Uba appealed for support from the government for the Inspector-General of Police , Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, to make his job of securing life and property effective.
He said: “With his track records as an operations officer, the IG deserves the support of all to succeed in this huge task of providing security for all.”
