Police arrest four over Oyingbo clash, say nobody died

LAGOS — Police in Lagos, yesterday, said nobody was killed in Sunday’s clash between factions of street urchins, popularly called Area Boys, during which several vehicles were vandalised.

It had earlier been reported that one person was feared dead in the clash.

The police also said four persons had been arrested in connection with the clash and are currently undergoing interrogation.

Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Joseph Jaiyeoba, told journalists, that the fight was as a reprisal by loyalists to one Alao Owolabi, representing Mainland constituency, who allegedly was earlier harassed by another sect of the street urchins in the Lagos Mainland Local Government Area.

Sources said the House of Representatives member was driving past a street, Saturday, when he was accosted by a group of boys, who demanded that he must ‘settle’ before being allowed to pass.

The embarrassed lawmaker allegedly parted with some amount of money before he was allowed to go.  He was said to have reported to his loyalists, who were equally in the same ‘business’ and they stormed the roads, Sunday evening, searching for the boys that harassed and extorted their man.

The rampaging boys, who reports had it could not get any of the Area boys, who assaulted the lawmaker, later descended on anybody on sight, vandalising vehicles and looting shops. Several people, including a policeman, were injured in the fracas.

An eye witness who described the clash as very serious said,  “It was a serious crisis, just like war.  It started with gunshots on Sunday,  when some boys stormed our area harassing everybody.  We later learnt that the whole problem started on Saturday, when Mr Seniyan, who just came back from Abuja gave the hoodlums N500,000 and their leader popularly called MC refused to share the money equally with his members.”
