ABEOKUTA- A deputy governorship candidate in last general election in Ogun State,Tunde Oladunjoye, has described ex-media aide to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr. Doyin Okupe, as “a desperate political jobber and frustrated permanent political office seeker”.
Reacting to the attack on ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo by Okupe, Oladunjoye, who was also former Chairman, Ijebu-East Local Government Area of the state, in a statement in Abeokuta, Tuesday, remarked that it had become important to make clarification and save the public from the ‘doyen of confusion called Okupe’.
Okupe had on Monday described the former President and Chairman, Board of Trustees, BoT, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as a liability to the party, who, according to him, cannot lead the party in the South West to victory in subsequent elections.
Speaking on Okupe’s new tittle, Oladunjoye said: “His new title of ‘Acting Leader’ donated to him in the Ijebu Igbo residence of Mr. Buruji Kashamu was not only laughable but also underscored the desperation of the group and the ignorance of its chief promoter, who is a trader rather than a politician.
”It confirms what is a public knowledge that Okupe has no political base, and in search of relevance and financial salvation. The title of ‘Acting Leader’ is unknown to PDP constitution.
“The established practice is that at the state level, the governor or former governor is the leader of the party. Where the party has no governor or former governor, the leadership caucus of the party meets to decide who the leader will be, and this was done in June last year in Abeokuta when Chief Adetunji Olurin was unanimously appointed as the leader of the party with Okupe and Kashamu in attendance.”
Describing Okupe and his team’s gesture as an attempt to contest leadership of the party with Olurin, Oladunjoye said “it is like a comical show of a dwarf attempting to rub shoulder with a six-footer.”
He, however, hinted that the party leadership would soon end the rift in the party, saying though disputes could not be wished away in any political setting, efforts at reconciliation were ongoing with those ready for genuine reconciliation, in line with the directives of the national body of the party and the constitution.
He described Okupe’s attack as a needless and baseless one from an agent provocateur who had failed to get the former President’s support for his sectarian politicking.
”Obasanjo in not a state leader. He is a national leader in the party and Chairman Board of Trustees. To the glory of God, PDP is the largest party in Nigeria today.
” It is a lesson in humility that despite his national and international standing, Chief Obasanjo still submits himself to the leadership of PDP at the national level, which recently swore to an affidavit at a Federal High court, Lagos that the idea of harmonized executives has failed in Ogun State and that there is no executives in the state.
”The blackmail from Okupe will therefore not work. He should look elsewhere to pour his political venom. It is regrettable that Chief Okupe, a trained doctor, has not practiced for over 20 years, but rather he is relying solely on hustling, political appointments and patronages.
”This explains his new role of devil’s advocate. I urge him to take the advice of Chief Obasanjo that a politician must have a second address and not rely solely on politics for means of livelihood.”
”This will be our last response to Okupe’s destructive and distracting antics as he is not worthy of anyone’s time or attention,”Oladunjoye submitted.
