Controversy trails Oyo polls re-run as PDP wins

By OLA AJAYI

IBADAN- CONTROVERSY has greeted last Saturday’s rerun House of Representatives election to Irepo/Orelope/Olorunsogo which the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Afeez Adelowo, won.

The election had earlier been declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission following violence that broke out in seven units. But, the remaining part of the election was held last Saturday.

The Action Congress of Nigeria,ACN, in the state rejected the results of the election, alleging that PDP used its federal might to harass and intimidate voters through the deployment of soldiers and mobile policemen.

Speaking through its state Publicity Secretary, Mr. Dauda Kolawole, the party said “we wish to state unequivocally that we reject the result of the re-run election in its entirety. The election was marred by low turn-out as a result of fear which had been created in the minds of the electorate.

All over the places where the elections were held, there were visible presence of soldiers and gun-wielding mobile policemen, a situation which forced most of the voters to stay indoor for fear of being molested by the security operatives.”
