ABUJA—Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, has bemoaned the prevalence of torture and unlawful detention beyond the stipulated 24 hours by the Nigeria Police Force. He warned that henceforth, any policeman that tortured any citizen or detained him beyond 24 hours would be disowned.

Abubakar spoke yesterday while addressing Deputy Commissioners of Police from various commands across the country as part of consultations with high ranking officers in the force.

He announced immi-nent changes in the force, saying he would propose an amendment to Police Order 327, which has to do with the use of fire arms.
