Uche Okafor: one year on

It is exactly one year today that former ex international, Uche Okafor, was found dead in his house in Dallas, USA.

The police in Dallas had assumed Uche committed suicide but later changed and said the cause of death was unknown and that investigations were ongoing. This was after medical examinations on the body failed to show features to conclude on their earlier assumption.

The circumstances of his death also remained confusing Nigerians and the police. The Association of Nigerians in Diaspora had accused the police of shoddy job and said their actions smacked of racism. Uche was giving a befitting burial in Owerri. His former teammates honoured him with a football match against an Owerri selected side.

Those in attendance included Jay Jay Okocha, Victor Ikpeba, Emeka Ezeugo, Peter Rufai, Austin Eguavoen, Ben Iroha, Uche Okechukwu, Ike Shorunmu, Mutiu Adepoju, Alloy Agu, etc. The Nigeria Football Federation was well represented and the National Sports Commission and former Nike marketing consultant Chief Noel Okorougo played great roles. So was Prince Lemmy Akakem..

“Friday will be one year that Uche left us and we shall have a one year remembrance prayer in his honour,” Uche’s widow Ify said yesterday. “God in His infinite mercy has led us on till this date and I thank Him for I know that my husband is resting in Him.”

Traditionally, the one year remembrance prayer also marks the end of mourning during which the widow may cease to be dressed in black.

The prayers will be offered in the compound where Uche was committed to mother earth.
