BISSAU (AFP) – Guinea-Bissau’s presidency on Monday confirmed in a statement the death of President Malam Bacai Sanha in the Val de Grace military hospital in Paris.
“The presidency informs Guinea-Bissau and the international community, with pain and dismay, of the death of his excellency Malam Bacai Sanha this morning at the Val de Grace in Paris where he was undergoing treatment,” the statement said.
The presidency added that details of the funeral would be made public soon.
Raimundo Pereira, the head of the National Assembly, from Sanha’s African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), will continue to perform the role of interim head of state.
According to the country’s constitution, new elections must be held within 90 days.
Sanha was elected in 2009 after the assassination of his predecessor Joao Bernardo Vieira, but spent much of his time in office in hospital suffering from an unknown illness.
His most recent stint in hospital saw him placed in an artificial coma in December.
