Lagos – The First Lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan, will on Monday in Lagos inaugurate “NNS THUNDER’’, a war ship donated to Nigeria by the U.S. Government.
The Information Officer, NNS Beecroft, Lt.- Cdr Jerry Omodara, said in a statement on Friday that the ship berthed in Nigeria on Jan. 4.
“NNS THUNDER’’, which was handed over to Nigeria on May 13, 2011, set sail on Nov. 21, 2011 and berthed at the Apapa Base on Jan. 4 at 10.58 a.m.
The Commanding Officer of the ship, Capt. Mohammed Baba, said that the ship sailed through California, Pacific Ocean, Trinidad, the Atlantic, stopped over in Senegal, Dakar before heading finally for Nigeria.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petirin, while receiving the ship, said its arrival was timely.
“The security challenges in the country, especially the problem of sea pirates, would soon be a thing of the past with the arrival of a well-equipped war ship THUNDER,’’ he said. (NAN)
