Police nab two over alleged killing of ex-army general

By Ifeanyi  Okolie
LAGOS — Two persons have been arrested by the police in Lagos State over the killing of a retired army general, Brigadier General Umai Jabil Uwurigbe (rtd), and an attempt to murder his wife, Mrs. Uwurigbe, in their apartment at Badagry area of Lagos State.

The suspect, who were identified as Samuel Sosu (38) and Sosube Abiodun (23), were apprehended recently by homicide operatives from State Criminal Investigations Department, Panti Yaba, Lagos.

Vanguard gathered that the duo, who were working for the General in his farmland, absconded after they allegedly perpetrated the act on Tuesday, September 20, 2011.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, who paraded the suspects, yesterday, said the general was macheted to death after the suspects and one other attacked him in his apartment at his residence at Iragon Village, along Ado-Odo Road, Morogbo, Badagry.

According to him, “while they were killing the General, his wife saw them and recognised them and consequently attacked her.

”The wife of the deceased was able to identify the suspects and Sosu was immediately arrested while Sosube was arrested a month later in Ogun State. However, one suspect is still at large.”

Jinadu noted that the suspects were citizens of Benin Republic residing in Nigeria illegally, adding that the case would soon be transferred to court.

The suspects, however, gave different accounts of the story.

Sosu said he had no hand in the murder, adding that he and the deceased had a very cordial relationship.

He said: “The General and I were very close. He gave me seven acres of land which I used for farming. I was not even at the crime scene. It was the two guys that I employed as labourers (Sosube and another person) that killed the General. I am just an herbalist turned farmer. I am not a criminal.”

However, Sosube who was not remorseful told our correspondent that Sosu procured him and a friend (still at large), to commit the crime so he could take posession of the land.

He said, “Sosu told my friend that we should go and kill the General and promised to reward us.

”On that day, my friend and I hid in the General’s compound and when the General came out to switch off his generator, we pounced on him and slashed him to death.

”When we noticed that his wife had seen us, we entered the apartment and cut her too but we didn’t know she survived.” Sosube claimed that he acted under the influence of metaphysical forces. “Sosu was the one that hypnotized me into committing the crime” he said.
