WARRI—IJAW in Delta State are protesting perceived incessant killing of their kinsmen in Warri by hoodlums and have vowed to retaliate if Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan failed to provide adequate security for them.
The aggrieved Ijaw drawn from Gbaramatu, Ogulagha, Odimodin and Ogbe-Ijoh communities, described as alarming, the number of Ijaw people killed, tortured and raped within one month.
In a statement over the murder of a prominent Ijaw man, Chief Emmanuel Timiyian, at Fani-Kayode Street by a gang of armed bandits, Chief Alfred Bubor, weekend, lamented that the decease was coming from a bank within the vicinity, when he was attacked.
He said: “A few weeks ago, one of our ladies was kidnapped, tortured and raped before she was released. Two other Ijaw youths suffered similar fate before last week’s bizarre killing of Chief Timiyian.”
Decrying the way his people were treated in their own state, he said, “regrettably, Ijaw are very sad over the matter, hence we want Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan to wade into the issue of insecurity in the state.”
We cannot say the attacks were targeted on Ijaws alone, but we had suffered so much in these hands of armed bandits, who are usually dressed in military outfit to perpetrate evil acts. It is difficult to differentiate the hoodlums from military or policemen.”
While indicting security operatives of non-performance in taming the criminals, the statement warned that “the Ijaws will be forced to defend themselves if the state government failed to defend them.”
