The President of Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Dr. Gani Enahoro has said the association is ready to promote the practical use of embryo transfer as a means of enhanced livestock production and key into the transformation agenda of President Jonathan just as he also called for the creation of the Ministy of Animal Health in the country.
Enahoro who made this known to Saturday Vanguard during a chat with him recently said there should be a robust livestok policy that will not only boost its production but also compliment the security system adequately.
“There should be Artificial Insemination (AI) techniques and centers would be promoted in the nooks and crannies of our communities as a way of increasing livestock production, in a similar fashion that human immunization centers has been brought to the door step of the populace to protect lives; there should be a practical use of embryo transfer as a means of enhanced livestock production as well as extensive use of security guard dogs and sniffer dogs as a preferred option to the numerous ineffective police check points all over our highways.”
“We are doing critical collaboration with our human medical counterparts in the Center for Disease Control (CDC) program of the Ministry of Health as part of a multi-disciplinary approach to dealing with health issues. We are currently re-engineering additional roles that can enable us contribute more towards the transformation agenda of President Jonathan.”
He stated that a lot of potentials are lying prostrate in the livestock industry that could add to the current GDP from agriculture into the national economy, adding that his association is ready to offer the best assistance in this regards if consulted.
“We are the best to count the herds and the farms because we know where they are. Even the nomadic herdsmen seek out the veterinarians at every location where they choose to stop,” he said.
In order to get these right, enahoro called for the creation of a separate ministry of Animal Health, Livestock production and Fisheries development away from the current structure of the various states ministries and Federal Ministry of Agriculture.
He disclosed that eight states have currently taken steps to harness the best that abound in livestock economy that has been left in the hands of disorganized farmers especially in the cattle industry.
He however called the Federal Government to lead the way by establishing in every state a Federal Veterinary Medical center that would serve as referrals and have facilities and manpower that meet international standards.
