Nigerian weightlifter, Felix Ekpo has said that the just concluded World Weightlifting Championship in Paris was his best performance at world stage.
The 77 kg category lifter informed Vanguard Sports that his performance and that of the other lifters would be good enough to earn Nigeria a slot for the Olympic after the final African qualifiers in March next year.
“This was one of our best outings as lifters in major championship given our preparations which we have never had before in the federation. My performance at the Championship was very good, I was so happy to have put up such a performance in an international tournament.
I competed in Group D and managed to finish amongst the top fifteen out of about fifty lifters. I think it is a good one for me because I did more than my personal best in the tournament. We as a country did not win any medal but we had good points to get us at least two slots in the Olympics which the tournament happens to be,” he said.
On his chances of picking a ticket for the Olympics next year at the forthcoming African qualifiers, he said, “Yes, I would be able to get more points that will give me a ticket to the Olympics. We (Nigeria) dominated the scene here in Africa, so I believe I should be able to get the slots needed to compete in London 2012,”he added.
