AHEAD of the Dec 17 Sokoto State governorship primaries of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, a faction of the party yesterday stormed the National Secretariat of the party with a call on the National Working Committee, NWC to disqualify Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko from participating in the race.
In a petition addressed to the PDP National Chairman, Abubakar Kawu Baraje, the group accused Bafarawa of anti party activities and also called for his indefinite suspension from the party.
Meanwhile, Senators and members of the House of Representatives from Sokoto State were at the National Secretariat of the party yesterday to purchase expression of Interest and nomination forms for the Governor ahead of the March 10, 2012 gubernatorial election.
Led by Senator Umaru Dahiru, PDP, Sokoto South, the lawmakers said they decided to purchase the forms for the governor to reduce the burden off his head, adding that they were solidly behind him as there was no vacancy in the Sokoto State government House. Members of the National Assembly from the state had on Thursday, October 20 visited the PDP National Secretariat Plaza to inform the leadership of the party of their resolve to endorse the governor for next year’s election
Yesterday’s petition against the governor, dated November 16, and made available to journalists was signed by seven prominent PDP stalwarts in addition to three PDP members each from the 23 LGAs of the state. Those who signed the petition included Alhaji Umaru Garkuwan Sifawa (Zonal Chairman), Alhaji Mahe Denge (Yeriman Sokoto), Hon. Haliru Garba Gidan Hamma and Hon. Aliyu Dikko
Others were Alhaji Aliyu Jekandu, Hon. Lawal Muhammed, Alhaji Abubakar Babangida and Hon. Bello Yahaya Wurno. The petitioners who tagged themselves as PDP members and leaders in Sokoto warned that if the leadership of the party failed to throw out Wamakko from the primary and ban him from holding any political office in the country, the PDP may suffer a very serious defeat during the governorship election.
‘’We find comfort and precedence in the recent action taken by the national executive of our great party in disqualifying prominent PDP candidates from contesting various elections, including incumbent governors on account of similar and even less serious infringements against the party constitution, values and interests.
’’We only ask you to use your good office to do same in Sokoto State to save our great party from disgrace in the forthcoming gubernatorial contest.
”We the members and PDP leaders in Sokoto State fear that unless urgent action is taken as soon as possible and before the end of November 2011, our party will suffer irreparable loss in the forthcoming polls,” the petition stated.
Other allegations against Wamakko include breach of the zoning principle in the emergence of the speaker of the State Assembly, supporting President Jonathan’s opponent in the January PDP presidential primary, supporting ANPP in Zamfara State and Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, in Kebbi State during the April governorship election, and the use of thugs during the election.
The group further called for the dissolution of the state exco of the party, levelling allegations of financial misapplication, lack of requisite educational qualifications, maladministration and favouritism against the party functionaries.
