Senate summons FCT Minister over N16bn variance in road contract sum

ABUJA—The Senate has summoned the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Senator Bala Mohammed, to appear before it and explain why a 20 kilometer road on the Abuja-Kubwa-Zuba express was awarded to a Chinese company at N81 billion, while 19 kilometre of the same road was awarded to a Nigeria firm at N66 billion.

Chairman, Senate Committee on FCT, Senator Smart Adeyemi, issued the summon at the weekend during the  inspection of road projects and other infrastructural facilities being handled by the Federal Capital Administration, FCTA.

The Committee was shocked by the discovery of N16 billion difference between the 20.5 kilometre part of the Abuja-Kubwa-Zuba Express Way which was awarded in 2009 to CGC Limited at the cost of N81.914 billion and 19.6 kilometres of the same road awarded to Dantata and Sawoe at N66.6 billion.

Adeyemi said:  “You cannot justify the N16 billion difference. It is unjustifiable; it is not acceptable to the Senate. We are not just novices on construction.

“We have looked at the project and there is not much difference. One is 20.5 kilometers and the other is 19.6 kilometers leaving a difference of 800 meters. That cannot justify the cost difference of N16 billion. The topography and the terrain are the same so you cannot justify the cost difference. We will take it up.”
