AWKA-THE nine branches of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, in the defunct eastern region, under the aegis of Eastern Bar Forum, EBF, have expressed concern over the long delays in the hearing of cases pending at the Court of Appeal.
Rising from a meeting in Nnewi last weekend, the NBA branches, comprising Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Imo, Rivers, Cross River and Bayelsa, called on the National Assembly to pass the bill on the amendment of the Court of Appeal Act to make it possible for the appointment of more Justices of the Court of Appeal.
Chairman of the Forum,Mr. Kemasuode Wordu, who read the resolution reached at the meeting, suggested that in the interim, the President of the Court of Appeal should post more judges to the divisions of the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, Owerri, Calabar and Enugu in order to expedite the determination of Appeals in the region.
Chairman of the NBA, Nnewi branch, Mr E. E. Egbuonu, called on the Federal Government to create a Court of Appeal in Anambra, arguing that more than 80% of all appeal cases at the Enugu division were from Anambra State.
