ARP calls for cancellation of Lagos council polls

By  Innocent Anaba
LAGOS—African Renaissance Party, ARP, Lagos State chapter, has called for the outright cancellation of last Saturday’s council polls, alleging massive rigging by ruling Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.

State chairman of the party, Chief Udoka Udeogaranya, in a statement, rejected the polls conducted by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC.

According to the party, “the polls as conducted by LASIEC were a display of fraud and systemic rigging in favour of ACN. This fraudulent conduct will go down as the worst elections in the history of this country by any standard.

“To begin with, ARP  chairmanship candidate for Eti-Osa council could not vote and 90 per cent of our supporters could not vote and even a commissioner of this state, who came to exercise his civic right, and to his embarrassment as to many others, could not vote, because LASIEC had moved most polling booths away from their traditional stations to some obscure places, where the eligible voters could not locate them,” alleging that  LASIEC ad-hoc staff at the booths were busy stuffing ballot boxes in favour of ACN.

“While we are totally disappointed with the conduct of this election by LASIEC, ARP would like to express its gratitude to our party agents and some good citizens, who reported these dastardly acts of LASIEC in connivance with ACN members, which resulted in some arrests being made.

“We now challenge the state governor, to march his words with actions, as this will convince him that the council elections conducted by LASIEC was marred horribly with electoral mal-practices and nothing but outright cancellation and an immediate dissolution of LASIEC would be acceptable,” the party added.
