MAKURDI – Commercial activities were paralysed yesterday morning in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, when about 3,000 youths alleged to be supporters of the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, staged a protest match at the popular Wurukum Roundabout over the dismissal of the petition by the party challenging the victory of Governor Gabriel Suswam in the April general elections in the state by the Court of Appeal.
The youths carried a mock coffin of the Governor just as they made bonfire along the major streets, causing pandemonium in the town.
This came against the backdrop of the order given by the Court of Appeal for the re-trial of case of certificate forgery filed against Governor Suswam by the defeated All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, governorship candidate in the last election, Prof. Daniel Saror.
The five panellists of the Appeal Court led by Justice Muhammed Ysamiya held that the Benue State Election Petition Tribunal had jurisdiction to hear the matter contrary to the tribunal’s earlier ruling.
