The governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola, wants the separation of the Federation Account from the Federal Government’s account as is the case under a federal system of government.
Aregbesola argued that for as long as the Federal Government controls the entire resources of the federation, there would always be conflicts at the state level in the areas of declaring the financial resources and sharing formula.
The governor spoke in Osogbo, the state capital on Friday at the maiden convocation lecture of the Fountain University, which was delivered by the governor of Niger State, Dr. Mua’zu Babangida Aliyu.
The lecture was titled: “Leadership and Governance: Emerging Issues for Genuine Transformation of Nigeria.”
Aregbesola stated, “The best form of government for a nation with multi-ethnic nationalities like Nigeria is federalism. Most of us, particularly those that have managed the Nigerian states as an entity, know that the name of Nigeria is not Nigeria alone, not Liberia like Liberia, not Congo like Congo, but it is Federal Republic of Nigeria. The simple interpretation of that is that the Federation Account should be distinct and different from the Federal Government’s account”.
He said that the Federal Government using and maintaining the same account with the Federation Account is a big contradiction in the federalism that is in operation in Nigeria.
The current system being in operation in Nigeria, he said, does not give autonomy to the states, saying that “our nation is a federation and the meaning of federation is simply autonomy for the federating units”.
