Mr. Michael Igbokwe, SAN, has advised maritime institutions to respond positively to the Freedom of Information, FoI, Act 2011.

Igbokwe gave the advice in Lagos at a one-day workshop organised by Ships & Ports Communication Company for top management staff of maritime parastatals.

He said the workshop was for those responsible for implementation of the FoI Act to understand their jobs and the implications of failure to respond to the Act.

According to him, it is one of the best things that have happened to the maritime industry to guide its officials.

Igbokwe said: “It is an act to make public records and information available and to also protect public records and personal privacy.

“Members of the public have the locus standi to institute legal action for non-disclosure of information.”
