MAKURDI—A ghastly motor accident involving the convoy of the Senate President, David Mark, has claimed the lives of the official driver of the Senate President and a police inspector attached to his office.

The accident which involved the official car of the Senate President occurred around Benue Burnt Bricks Junction on the outskirts of Otukpo at 7:30 a.m.

Eyewitnesses told  Vanguard that an Otukpo- bound trailer loaded with cement had a head-on collision with the official car leaving two persons dead on the spot while the third, a security aide, who was said to be in critical condition was rushed to Makurdi for medical attention.

It was further gathered that the Senate President was not in the convoy at the time of the accident.

An insider, who spoke to Vanguard on grounds of anonymity, said the convoy had left Otukpo, yesterday morning en route Abuja ahead of Senator Mark who was to travel by helicopter later that morning.

He said three kilometres into the journey, the Aide- De-Camp, ADC, to the Senate President ordered the driver of the ill-fated vehicle to return to Otukpo to pick up a forgotten baggage.

He said: “He had picked up the luggage and was driving back on top speed to catch up with the rest of the convoy when he ran into the trailer in a head-on collision at Burnt Bricks Junction.”

Vanguard gathered that the Senate President’s official driver died instantly while the police inspector died on the way to Otukpo General Hospital.

Meanwhile, the remains of the dead driver and inpector have been deposited at Otukpo General Hospital mortuary while the mangled official car has been towed to the Police Area Command in Otukpo.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, for Benue State, Mr. Ejike Alaribe, ASP, told Vanguard that he was to be briefed on the incident.
