IKEJA-Thirty-five members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, yesterday, expressed support for the embattled Speaker of the House, Mr. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, over the “orchestrated” allegation of N7 billion misappropriation of public fund levelled against him by a group, describing the allegation as ridiculous, frivolous and unfounded.

This came as they ruled out any plans by the House to commence impeachment move or setting-up an investigation panel into the matter.

It will be recalled that officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, last Friday,  begun investigation into allegations contained in a petition by a group, Nigerian Anti-Corruption Vanguard, which prompted EFCC’s investigation,  that Ikuforiji mismanaged N7 billion running cost of the Assembly in 12 months.

On Monday, operatives of EFCC stormed the house and carted away documents from its  accounts office. They also invited some principal officers of the House for questioning.

Leading other members at a briefing at the lobby of the Assembly, Deputy Speaker, Mr. Kolawole Taiwo, said there had been a well-orchestrated campaign to rubbish the character and integrity of the Speaker and tarnish the image of the legislative arm of  government.

He said: “This baseless allegation should only be dismissed with the contempt it deserves. The Lagos State House of Assembly remains solidly behind the leadership of the Speaker. He has led the House with integrity and maturity. We will not be distracted from continuing to play our role in the ongoing radical transformation of the  Assembly.

“The monthly running cost covers the entire expenditure of the House comprising the elected legislators and the bureaucracy of over 600 staff. It includes sundry items such as travels, trainings (both local and overseas) office running and maintenance, vehicles, entertainment, publicity, protocols, logistics and administrative costs, etc.”
