Youths threaten to shut oil facilities over DESOPADEC board membership

WARRI—Diebiri Youth Council, DYC, Delta State, yesterday, argued that the Diebiri Kingdom, being the current highest oil-producing Ijaw Kingdom should produce the incoming Ijaw Commissioner on the board of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, in line with the agency’s enabling law.

Mr.  Bob Collins, Secretary of DYC warned that Diebiri youths would resist appointment of any other person in violation of DESOPADEC’s enabling law by shutting oil facilities on its territory. He said Gbaramatu and Ogulagha Kingdoms were currently not producing oil due to vandalized oil pipelines, adding “even if they did, they enjoyed the chairmanship and Ijaw commissionership slots in Chiefs Wellington Okirika and Francis Temewei respectively, in the last DESOPADEC board.

“With Ogbe-Ijoh Kingdom, producing the current Delta State Commissioner for Environment in Mr. Frank Omare, it is only fair that Diebiri Kingdom, deprived of secondary schools and health facilities, get the Ijaw DESOPADEC Commissioner,” he added.
