National Industrial Court president to preside over 5th LIM forum

President, National Industrial Court of Nigeria(NICN), Justice Babatunde Adejumo  OFR is expected to be chairman of the 5th Lawyers In The Media (LIM) Forum during this year’s Annual General Conference(AGC) of the Nigerian Bar Association(NBA) on Wednesday, August, 24. The one week NBA Confab kicks off from Sunday, August 21 to Friday, August 26 in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.

While accepting to preside at the forum, Justice Adejumo congratulated LIM and other members of the Freedom of Information Coalition “on the enactment of the Freedom of Information”, adding that ,”I will be preparing a paper on the topic- The National Industrial Court of Nigeria:The Journey So Far”.

Chairman, Silverbird Group, Mr. Ben Murray Bruce is the Lead Speaker while the Discussants are- Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr.Reuben Abati, Dean, Faculty of Law, Rivers State University of Science and Technology(RSUST), Mrs. Bunmi Akaakar and two US based Attorneys- Muyiwa Sobo and Kayode Oladele.

The Role of Broadcast Media in the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria will be discussed.

The First LIM Forum was in Ilorin during the 2007 NBA AGC  where the former Director General, NTA, Dr. Tonnie Iredia was the Lead Speaker. He spoke on “Broadcasting In A Developing Country: Challenge To Professionalism”.

His paper was discussed by the then Executive Director/ CEO,Daily Independent , Ted Iwere and Executive Director, Media Rights Agenda(MRA), Edeatan Ojo.

The 2nd LIM Forum took place in 2008 at NBA Conference in Abuja and was chaired by the former Chief Justice of Nigeria Salihu Modibbo  Alfa Belgore GCON.

Former Information and Culture Minister  Prince Tony Momoh delivered the Lead Paper titled: The Non-justiciability of Chapter 2 of the 1999 Constitution and its Implications for the Immunity Clause”.

The Discussants were former Managing Director, DAAR Communications, late Alhaji Ladi Lawal and the now House of Representative Member, Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele, then in his capacity as Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Lagos State.

The topic for the 3rd LIM Forum was “Crusade Against Corruption and the effects of trial by media”.The Lead Speaker was Prof. Peter Fogam of the Commercial and  Industrial Department, Faculty of Law,University of Lagos(UNILAG).

Executive Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC), Mrs. Farida Waziri was the Guest of Honour delivered an Opening Remarks.

Fogam’s paper was discussed by Professor Ralph Akinfeleye of the Department of Mass Communications(UNILAG), Kinsgley Osadolor,Legal Adviser and member,The Edirorial Board , The Guardian Newspaper and Chairman, Centre for Free Speech ,Richard Akinnola.

The 4th LIM Forum was during the 2009 NBA Conference in Kaduna where Lagos lawyer and Human Rights Activist, Bamidele Aturu as the Lead Speaker spoke on “How Free is Press Freedom in Nigeria in the last Fifty Years.”

Chairman of LIM, Gbolahan Gbadamosi said all the papers delivered so far would be available in book form during the forum in the Garden City, adding that attendance at the forum was open to all participants.
