Flying Eagles’ coach John Obuh said his main target at the July 29- August 20 FIFA Under-20 World Cup was to qualify from the group stages and it was only after that he can make a claim for the title.
Obuh who jetted out with his team on Tuesday to Portugal for a training tour, argued that group D featuring Croatia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Guatemala was a tough one. Therefore his priority would be to get out that paring.
“Our group is tough, but people do not see it that way. So when we get there our target would be to qualify for the next stage and then we would take it from there,” Obuh said before their departure from Lagos.
He said that the boys are ready and well prepared for the tournament adding that the usually Nigerian way of doing things did not get into the way of their preparations. “As far as I’m concerned we have done our best in preparations. I usually do allow the Nigerian system to get in the way. I’m always prepared for eventualities,” Obuh stated.
The team will play against Portuguese Under-20 on July 13, before moving on to Panama for a brief stay before moving over to Colombia. Nigeria will open its account with Guatemala on July 31 in Armenia.
