Lagos — There was a bloody clash between factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, and commercial bus drivers along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, which left scores of persons injured.
It was gathered that trouble started at about 7a.m, following an invasion of a motor park around Toll Gate by suspected members of NURTW from Lagos State, who demanded for daily returns from the commercial bus drivers.
But their demand met stiff resistance from the drivers, who reportedly protested the hike in the daily collection, thereby resulting in the former forcefully chasing the drivers out of the park.
When news of the invasion filtered round, another faction of NURTW, who had been collecting toll from the drivers, arrived the park to chase their opponents away.
This led to a free-for-all, as dangerous weapons such as guns, broken bottles, cutlasses were used. The thugs blocked the road and prevented road users from plying the route. Those who dared had their car windscreens shattered.
The clash spread from Toll gate to Kola and Agbado- Ijaye bus-stops, with the warring factions inflicting injuries on anyone in sight. This forced shop owners to close for the day.
A team of policemen, which attempted to contain the situation at Agbado-Ijaye was reportedly overwhelmed by the miscreants. But reinforcement from Area G Command forced the warring factions out of the road.
