ENUGU – LACK of funds has hampered breast cancer awareness campaign in the South-East and South-South zones.
Past District Governor of Rotary Club, Lady Elizabeth Nwankwu, said this in Enugu during a day review/experience sharing meeting on Breast Cancer Initiative Project in six states of the two zones.
She lamented that breast clinics in 70 primary health centres across the six states were pruned down to 20 because of lack of funds to sustain them.
Nwankwu called for the inclusion of breast clinics in annual budgets of states and local governments as well as the provision of adequate stipends for logistics and mammography machines in high incident areas.
She enumerated some of the challenges faced during the implementation of the breast cancer awareness to include lack of government
assistance and support, funding and delay in accessing treatment in referral centres.
Nwankwu explained that the awareness initiative started as a pilot project of the Rotary Foundation in 2008/2009 in 11 states.
