Kano citizens urge payout to Pfizer drug victims

Kano – Four ‘concerned citizens’ of Kano State have asked the State House of Assembly to press for the payment of compensation to victims of Cerebrospinal Meningitis drug test in Kano.

The citizens are Alhaji Zubairu Mohammed, Alhaji Auwalu Abdu, Alhaji Balarabe Gabari, and Alhaji Musa Ibrahim.

The trials, popularly called Trojan drug test, were carried out by Pfizer, a pharmaceutical company, in 1996.

In a letter to the Speaker of the House, the four also demanded an investigation into the out-of-court settlement agreed between Pfizer and the state government over the claims of the victims.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN,  reported the foursome as saying,  weekend,  “We appeal to the honourable House to investigate the whole settlement issue to determine if it was in the interest of the poor victims, or manipulated by some persons
for their selfish interest.”

They said they were at a loss as to why only four victims were shortlisted for the payment of compensation, when Pfizer also agreed to pay compensation to 192 others on whom it conducted DNA tests.
