ENUGU-GOVERNOR Sullivan Chime of Enugu State has said his government will offer necessary assistance to the Enugu Sports Club in its efforts to develop and promote sports and sporting activities in the state.
Chime who is also the President of the club made the promise while inaugurating the new Richard Agu-led Executive of the club for 2011 – 2012.
The Governor noted that the club at 82 was one of the oldest sports clubs in the country, adding that it had contributed to sports and advancement of the social economic life of the people.
He therefore commended the achievements of the past executives of the club, especially in maintaining the structures there and for keeping alive the aims and objectives of her founding fathers.
He said, “We are proud of your achievements in this club over the years. I am also proud to be part of this ceremony which provided relaxation for our members and their guests. As a government we will continue to identify with the club, assist in the efforts to give it a face lift and promote sports in the state.”
In his inaugural speech, the new Chairman of the Club, Mr. Agu thanked members for returning him to the office unopposed, a development he described as the first of its kind in the eighty-two years history of the club.
The Club Chairman described the gesture as both a show of confidence and a big challenge pledging that “such a trust as has been put in our hands will never be betrayed.”
