Lagos – The Head Coach of the national U-16 basketball team, Johnson Ayinla, said on Thursday in Lagos that the players were preparing for nothing but the gold medal of the 2011 Afrobasket Cadet Championship in Egypt.
Ayinla said that though Nigeria were drawn in the same Group A with good basketballing nations, there was nothing to fear at the event holding from July 8 to July 17.
Other countries in the group are the hosts, Algeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea and Mozambique.
In Group B are Mali, Congo, South Africa, Angola, Libya and Tunisia.
Ayinla said that the team would surpass their second runners-up position in the 2009 edition.
He said that the coaches of the team had combed the nooks and crannies of the country for quality young players.
“At the end of our search for talents across the nation, we were able to discover no fewer than 46 players from among whom we will be selecting the best 12 for the championship,’’ he said.
Ayinla said that because of the Final Eight play-offs of the DSTV Basketball Premier League that would begin
soon, a date and venue for the closed camp had yet to be determined for the team by the Nigeria Basketball Federation. (NAN)
