Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has condemned alleged assault on one of its members, the Deputy Registrar of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, Comrade Iheme and his wife by some soldiers in Bauchi State.
In a statement by the, Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and National President of SSANU, Comrade Promise Adewusi, the union said it was unjust for the soldiers to have carried out such act on innocent civilian, adding that the perpetrators should be brought to book for justice publicly,
Besides, the SSANU president said they should be made to imbibe the tenets of civility and warned that if nothing is done, the union will be forced to publicly protest the injustice.
Comrade Adewusi said that if such unchecked brutality and injustice that is festering the embers of the prevailing insecurity in the country were left to continue, it would further pose a serious threat to peace.
He stated that government must prove that it has the capacity to protect the civil rights of Nigerians.
The statement read: “SSANUvehemently condemns the bestiality and brutality visited on one of her members, Mr. Iheme (Deputy Registrar ATBU) and his wife by some overzealous soldiers in Bauchi. These animals in human skin should be reminded that Nigeria in 2011 is no longer under jackboot rule.
“SSANU will not accept a situation where this case is buried under investigation; The perpetrators of this savagery must be brought to justice publicly and made to imbibe the tenets of civility otherwise SSANU will be forced to publicly protest this injustice. It is such unchecked brutality and injustice that is festering the embers of insecurity in the country.
Therefore, justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done to discourage further pushing Nigeria back to the dark days of state of nature where might is right and life becomes British and short. In this instance case government must prove it has the capacity to protect the civil right of Nigerians.”
