PORT HARCOURT— CHAIRMAN of Nigeria’s Governors’ Forum, and Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi, has called for amendment of the 1999 constitution to tackle deficiencies in the nation’s federalism.
The governor who spoke at a state banquet in Government House, Port Harcourt, Wednesday night, in honour of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr Aminu Tambuwal and his Deputy, Mr Emeka Ihedioha, said the National Assembly should effect the necessary amendments to the constitution to transform the country into a true federal state.
The Governor, who said it was also the thinking of the Governors’ Forum that the constitution be amended to achieve true federalism, added that the forum will want a situation where the constitution would address grey areas on issues of revenue allocation.
He said, “I am one of those who want a proper amendment of the constitution. It is the belief of the Governors’ Forum that we need such an amendment, especially to deliver on the issues of revenue, and a proper federalism.”
Governor Amaechi who described the House of Representatives as the most vibrant arm of government because of the different shades of opinion, interest and background of members, noted that the young men in the House are patriotic and determined to move the country forward. He urged the leadership to work with the Executive to ensure the development of the country.
On his part, the Speaker said the House was ready to collaborate with all stakeholders in the country to promote peace, harmony and socio-economic development of the country.
