IBADAN — A group in the South West under the aegis of Jonathan/Sambo Youth Support Movement has called for joint police and military team to disarm illegal armed persons and groups across the country.

Describing illegal possession of arms and ammunition as threat to national unity and peaceful co-existence, it said proliferation of arms was one of the causes of the incessant and disturbing violence in some parts of the country.

In a statement by its Secretary, Mr. Gbemileke Alagbe,  Mr. Taofeek Lawal, an ex-officio and seven other persons, the group advised those who lost in the last elections to develop spirit of sportsmanship for the progress of the country.

The members of the group who came from Kwara, Lagos, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti and Ogun States said violence was an impediment to the progress of any nation and the earlier we embraced peace, the better.

It called on all losers in the just concluded elections to give premium to national unity by “cooperating with Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and his government in advancing the course of this great nation for the benefit of the black race and proper legacy bequeathable to our future generation”.

The statement stated further, “Nigerian youth has come of age and achieving genuine economic sovereignty for our fatherland Nigeria which has been made elusive for so long is now a matter of very near future”.

To this end, it “advocates with all sense of concern that the unsuccessful candidates who are respectable citizens and eminent personalities in their own right should adopt true mind of good sportsmanship”.

It added that the National Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, had convinced all Nigerians that academia from universities across the country had enough wherewithal to deliver fair and credible polls in future elections.
