Don King wants Ogba as Sports Minister

President, Goodluck Jonathan has been urged to appoint, a sports technocrat as Sports Minister and Chairman, National Sports Commission (NSC), when he names members of his cabinet,, upon his swearing-in on May 29 in Abuja.

Making this plea yesterday in a telephone conversation, top boxing promoter, Martins Osaile, said that sports administration has become too complex and dynamic to be left in the hands of people who have no proven records in sports development in the country.

Osaile, who is regarded by sports followers as the Nigerian version of the Don King of America, because of his eye-popping grey hairs, said President Jonathan must do away with the principle of zoning the position of the Sports Minister to the north, arguing that past experiences have shown that those from that region, had not contributed meaningfully to the growth of sports.

In arguing his case for the zoning of the leadership of the Sports Ministry to the south, Osaile, said that records are there to prove that sports thrived better when the top administration was in the hands of those who know sports.

Speaking further, Osaile, said that from the list of those submitted to the Presidency for ministerial appointments that only Solomon Ogba, from Delta State, has the capacity to drive Nigerian sports to the promised land in terms of athletes success and Nigeria’s achievement of the Vision 20-20-10.

Osalie argued that Ogba, a former Commissioner of Sports, where he led Delta State to successive victories at the National Sports Festival and presently President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and second vice-president of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, has the wherewithal to develop a blueprint that would save sports from the throes of further decay.

“Ogba is the person who can salvage the situation which our sports presently face. If President Goodluck Jonathan is serious about developing our sports, he should move quickly to appoint Ogba the next Minister of Sports because in all the past positions he held as a sports administrator, he left with an impressive scorecard. Failure is far from him and he surely salvage the situation”, said Osaile.
