LAGOS — Two Non-Commissioned policemen, NCOs, were arrested during Tuesday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections along Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway, for allegedly being in possession of fake currencies.
The suspects, Corporal Afolabi Aregbesola and Monday Matthew, were arrested by soldiers deployed to man Iyana-Ipaja under bridge.
Vanguard gathered that while the elections were in progress, the soldiers intercepted a Toyota Camry saloon car with number plate EW 142 SMK, at about 2 p.m. On enquiry, the two occupants identified themselves as policemen on election duty.
But the soldiers reportedly insisted on searching the vehicle, on noticing that the men were not in police uniform. In the process, 14 bundles of starched Nigeria currencies suspected to be fake and another bundles of the United States dollar, all in one dollar denomination, were found concealed in a black sack inside the booth of the car.
They were subsequently arrested and later handed over to the command, where they were discovered to be NCOs.
Sources said so far the suspects had not been able to give account of how they came about the fake currencies.
