Senator injured in Abakaliki protest

ABAKALIKI – THE All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, candidate for Ebonyi Central senatorial seat in Ebonyi State, Senator Emmanuel Onwe, was at the weekend wounded as a policeman shot a tear gas canister that landed on his shoulders during the party’s protest of police brutality during  last National Assembly’s election.

Speaking before receiving medical attention at the Federal Medical Centre, Abakaliki, Senator Onwe noted: “This brutality and massive abuse of fundamental human rights unleashed on innocent citizens of Ebonyi State by men of Ebonyi Police Command must be roundly condemned.

“Opening fire on innocent protesters is a crime and I call on the Inspector General of Police to commence an investigation with urgency and those arrested for exercising their right to peaceful protest must be released forthwith.”

Earlier before the protesters went through the major streets of Abakaliki chanting songs of condemnation against police collusion with agents of Ebonyi State government, they addressed newsmen at the Peoples Club Resort from where they took off.
