*As LP, PDP, ACN deny involvement

AKURE – DESPERATE candidates in the political parties in Ondo State have commenced the purchase of voter’s cards from the electorates ahead of Saturday’s polls.
Feelers across the state indicated that the politicians who cut across the leading political parties in the state buy the cards for N5,000 from the registered voters. It was learnt that the reason was to make sure that those people who have sold their cards are unable to vote during the elections.
Vanguard gathered that candidates of the parties targeted the strong constituencies of their co-contestants and have dispatched party members to buy the voters cards from unsuspecting voters, especially the illiterates in the areas. The buying of voter’s cards according to investigations, is presently going on in the three Senatorial Districts of the state.
A party member who confided in Vanguard said they resorted to this exercise because malpractices such as ballot snatching and other electoral fraud may not be easy in the coming elections. According to him:“We decided on this last minute joker when it became obvious that ballot snatching and other irregularities may not be possible in the coming elections.”
State Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, Dr Olaiya Oni, however absolved the party of such act, saying “the people of the state have seen the performance of the party in the last two years and the party does not need to buy voters cards to win convincingly in the coming polls.”
State Chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Jumoke Anifowose also denied involvement of the party , saying “we are still looking for funds to pay our agents, we are not involved at all.”
However, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Publicity Secretary Chief Adeyemi Adedipe, pointed accusing fingers at the ruling LP.
It will be recalled that the Ondo State government few days ago cried out over the activities of desperate politicians across the state that had been going round to purchase the voters cards from unsuspecting voters.
The Information Commissioner Ranti Akerele in Akure, said, “it has come to the notice of Ondo State Government that some unscrupulous individuals have been going about purchasing voters card from the people.”
