It’s time for Nigerians to live above poverty level, says Sambo

Lagos – Vice President Namadi Sambo, on Wednesday said that time was ripe for Nigerians to live above poverty level because of the abundant natural resources of the country.

Sambo made the statement in Lagos while addressing about 2,000 members of Arewa groups ahead of Saturday’s presidential election.

The groups include PDP Arewa Women, Arewa Youth Foundation, Arewa Solution, Okada Riders Association, Middle Belt Groups for Positive Change and Army Barrack Youth Frontier.

He said Nigerians needed a leader that would take  them out of poverty.

He mentioned various developmental programmes embarked upon by the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration in the last six months.

He said the improvement in the power sector and the plans to build universities in the 36 states were some of the administration’s achievements.

The Vice President gave the assurance that the government would create enabling environment for small and medium scale business to grow through access to low interest loans facility.

“We are making efforts to ensure that small and medium scale business get loan at one to three per cent interest to boost their businesses and make enough profit,’’ he said.

Sambo noted that since Nigeria was one of the largest producers of crude oil, it was pertinent to transform the country for the people to live well and enjoy the dividend of democracy.

Alhaji Haruna Farouk, Chairman of the Arewa political group, urged the community in Lagos to disassociate themselves from those selling their votes.

Farouk said their votes were their future and if sold for peanuts, would jeopardise their development as well as the lives of their children.

“Do not sell your future. Do not waste your vote. It is time for us to enjoy the economy of the country,’’ he said.

He appealed to the people to be united in other to live in peace, irrespective of their religion or ethnicity.(NAN)
