OWERRI – National Office of West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has said it would flush out any staff of the establishment that is out to destroy its corporate image.
Head of National Office of WAEC, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae, read the riot act in a message delivered on his behalf by the Deputy Registrar/Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Kester Enyioma Ekekwe, during the WAEC Day celebration in Owerri.
Uwadiae said: “Since her establishment in 1952, the Council has striven to be an organization known for excellence in the conduct of examinations. We will continue to encourage hard working staff and flush out those who will spoil the good work.”
He said that considering the sensitive nature of the service WAEC renders, “we must ensure that we take the right steps that will place us above board and improve public confidence in the quality of service we provide.”
Uwadiae appealed to principals, parents, guardians and all stakeholders to join WAEC to fight examination malpractice, stressing that the nation’s future and the future of Nigerian children were at stake, if immediate steps were not taken to combat the malaise.
Earlier in his welcome address, Chairman, Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, WAEC, Owerri branch, Comrade Gerald Maduabuchi Ihim, reminded management that there were unresolved issues which labour was tackling.
Ihim said: “Some of the outstanding issues include regularization of appointment of staff on contract or temporary employment, particularly staff employed before the commencement of the scheme of service in 1998.”
He also called for review of establishment and regular promotion of national staff, reinstatement of 300 percent of station allowance to staff servicing NEC and other council meetings and payment of hospitality allowance to staff at co-ordination/marking venues.
