Sokoto – Minister of Transport, Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman, has stressed the need for the establishment of Inland Dry Port in Sokoto in order to make port and other shipping services accessible to shippers in the axis.
The minister stated this in an address at the official opening ceremony of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council Sokoto Area Council, which took place, Wednesday in Sokoto.
He observed that the establishment of the area office of the Nigerian Shippers Council would help in the facilitation of international trade and the protection of importers and exporters in the area, comprising Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states.
According to Suleiman: “I believe that the presence of Nigerian Shippers’ Council in Sokoto will greatly assist the cross border traders in the axis to formalise their age-long informal, small and medium scale cross-border trade with neighbouring countries of Niger and Benin.
This will in turn eliminate, or at least, minimize the risk they run in losing their goods, which in some cases constitute their entire working capital, to anti-smuggling activities.”
