The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has dared the Senate to go ahead with its planned National Security and Good Governance Award and incur its wrath.
Senate Committee on Police Affairs, headed by Sen Gbenga Ogunniya, had planned the award for Sunday, March 20, 2011, to honour some persons who it claimed had contributed to security of lives and property in the country.
But NANS President, Comrade Bassey Etuk Williams, and his Secretary-General, Comrade Jossy Ekpe, said in a statement that the students’ body would not hesitate to call out Nigerian students on demonstrations against the event should the Senate go ahead with the award, describing it as a political jamboree that was not in the interest of the country.
The association also called on the upper chamber to restructure the leadership and membership of the Committee on Police Affairs immediately, stressing that the current legislators in the committee seemed to have lost direction as far as issues of national importance were concerned.
It also admonished the senators to always pursue issues that affect the people who gave them the mandate to be at the hallowed chamber as representatives, rather than engage in self-glorification.
