BENIN – EDO State Governor, Mr Adams Oshiomhole has canvassed for tough sanctions against fraudulent Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, officials found to have aided election rigging.

The governor who made the call while receiving a delegation from the Institute of Security Studies at the Government House, yesterday, in Benin, said  “Democracy is superior to any form of government. For us to have a free and fair election, INEC must be truly independent. It is wrong for the Federal Government to retain fraudulent electoral officers, who have been found guilty by the courts of law.

He insisted that in a democratic set up, the people should have a government they deserve, adding that “those of us who hold office do so at the pleasure of the ordinary people. Because they are the masters, we must listen to them to have good governance.

“Even where democracy is not able to deliver dividends, it is the driver that needs to be changed not the vehicle. For us to have credible elections, even our language must be civil.

“The very fact that the National Assembly, which is dominated by the ruling class uses its number to enact a law that compels Nigerians to climb the tree from the top is illogical. It is designed to create a bandwagon effect and move us closer to a one-party state. You cannot have democracy if you have only one party,” he said.

The governor who highlighted the achievements of his administration noted that the best way to reconnect the people was to bring governance to the grassroots beyond rhetoric.
