Lagos – Three Nigerians have won medals at the ongoing 3rd Faaz International Powerlifting Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Toyin Aluko, the Secretary-General, Paralympics Committee Nigeria, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) by telephone from Dubai that Nigeria would take part in four events on Monday.
“We are all happy with the impressive start by our athletes on Sunday in the three events we took part in.
“Their performance will spur other athletes to do well. They will take part in four events today (Monday) and I am sure that they will all do well,” Aluko said on Monday.
She said the championships served as qualifies for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
“The championships are very important to us and all the participating countries because they are Olympic qualifiers.
“Athletes will score points in the competition with other International Paralympics Committee (IPC) championships to qualify for the 2012 Olympics.
“Our plan is to take part in all the IPC-sanctioned competitions to qualify more of our athletes for the Games.
“The organisers of the All Africa Games have removed powerlifting from the competition, so we are left with only the IPC-sanctioned tournaments to qualify for the London Games,” Aluko said.
Nigeria is featuring 12 athletes in the championships which end on Thursday. (NAN)
