Lagos – The Lagos State Sports Council has said that it will concession the swimming pool at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Yaba, to some corporate organisations for effective management.
The council’s Director of Sports, Adewunmi Ogunsanya, disclosed on Wednesday in Lagos while speaking on the dilapidated facility.
Ogunsanya debunked the notion that the swimming pool had been abandoned by sports authorities, saying that government was responsible for the development of sports and facilities generally.
He said the council had reached agreement with four companies with genuine interest on the concession but did not disclose their names.
Ogunsanya said the council went into the public-private partnership to relieve the government of some financial burdens.
He said that fine-tuning the terms of the concession with the companies for swimmers to benefit was delaying the commencement of rehabilitation of the facility by the yet to be named concessionaires.
“We have held rounds of talks with four companies, the swimming pool will start working as soon as the contract agreement is finalised,” he said.
The pool which was used by swimmers in Lagos state had been out of use since the late 1990’s.
Efforts by the State Government to the revive swimming pool failed as TDA Consulting Ltd, which was given the contract to renovate it since 2008 could not revamp it. (NAN)
